History

For more information on the I-verse's history see the Impossibilities Timeline.

In the beginning, the Entity ordered the universe. It untangled the knots of reality and removed the chaos. In this universe, there would be one inhabited planet and one sentient species. There would be no magic, no unusual genetic mutations, and no physics defying technology. Once the work was done, the Entity withdrew to let the clockwork run. It ran well for millions of years.

In October of 1943, the United States government conducted experiments to explore the potential military applications of the unified field theory. A Navy destroyer escort, the USS Eldridge, was equipped with special devices designed to render it invisible to radar. Instead, when the equipment was switched on the Eldridge vanished from the Naval Yards in Philadelphia, appeared in Norfolk, Virginia, and then reappeared back in the Philadelphia shipyards.

No one aboard the Eldridge could describe what happened. Five sailors were literally fused into the bulkheads, as if they had just slipped through the metal and gotten stuck halfway through. Nearly a quarter of the crew just vanished, as if they had never been there at all. Many others seemingly went insane, suffering from schizophrenic episodes. The most mysterious thing, however, was the suit of armor found in the hull of the ship. It was seemingly made from advanced technology and obviously made for a human being. An American seal was even painted on the chest plate. Puzzled but in need of resources to combat the enemy, the military began testing the armor – dubbing it the American Centurion project.

Meanwhile, strange events began to occur. The Philadelphia Experiment had worn the fabric between this universe and hundreds, if not thousands of others, thin. Those universes began to leak into this one, altering the ordered nature that the Entity had worked so hard to create. Across the United States and in other parts of the world there were reports of creatures and odd powers. Crackpot scientists found their previously incredible failures now worked. The stories seeped into the media, finding a place between stories about the War in Europe and the War in the Pacific. When asked about these odd occurrences, Dr. Ronald Castille, a leading biologist, told a reporter that such things were ‘Impossibilities’. The name stuck. Two months later, Foo Fighter, the first publicly documented Impossibility, took part in a dogfight over Germany. A month later several Impossibilities banded together to drive Kaija, a giant lizard monster, away from San Francisco and back into the ocean.

In June, the United States introduced Operation: Alpha. The team consisted of Codebreaker, Serpent Girl, Doctor Prism, Foo Fighter, and the Battle Bull. It was led by the American Centurion and would become the foremost example of what Impossibilities could accomplish. Their actions at the Battle of Normandy and the Battle of Guam stunned the world. Germany and Japan fought back with their own Impossibilities but it was too late. The war turned in the favor of the Allies and, in August of 1945 the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The atomic explosions caught the attention of the Entity and It grew horrified at what had happened to It’s perfectly ordered universe. The damage mankind did to It’s universe in a few years would take centuries to undo. Until then, the Entity settled for a stop-gap measure. It took the primary focus for the dimensional damage, the American Centurion armor, and placed it in stasis. The world snapped to normal. Impossibilities ceased to exist. No new Impossibilities came into being and those who had powers lost them. The world returned to mundane normality for decades.

Then, in August 2000, a cable channel sponsored exploration group, Myth Seekers, found the American Centurion armor where it had been stored by the Entity. In short order, the United States government was contact and the armor retrieved. Almost immediately Impossibilities began cropping up.

While being transported through a small town on the way to prison, the grandson of the Battling Bull developed his grandfather’s powers. The newly created Minotaur broke free of the prison transport and began destroying the town. Serpent Girl, Foo Fighter, and Codebreaker, the only surviving members of Operation: Alpha, rediscovered their powers at that same moment. They rushed to the scene and began battling the Minotaur – a battle caught on live television. As old as they were, the three heroes were no match for the Minotaur and he killed them, one by one. However, their actions succeeded in keeping the man-beast from killing any innocents until Leon Washington, the hastily and newly appointed pilot of the American Centurion armor, could arrive on the scene and defeat the villain.

That was seven years ago. Since then, Impossibilities have become a sensation. They have become celebrities, heroes, and villains. There are magazines, tabloids, websites and reality television shows dedicated to Impossibilities. A new Operation: Alpha has been created by the government to combat against Impossibility threats, both internal and external. Other nations have followed suit. Israel uses Impossibilities to deal with their conflicts in Palestine. Japan’s team, the Super Soldier Six, are heavily marketed and have their own anime, manga, and product tie-in lines. The small island nation of Tuvalu was conquered by Queen Dragon, who somehow sent an entire British fleet packing. Perhaps most importantly, mankind has learned they aren’t alone. In August of 2005, the Sharooth, an alien race, attacked Earth. Only the combined might of most of the world’s militaries and Impossibilities pushed them back. The victory came at a cost, however. The United States’ resources were so exhausted they could not properly respond to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

The world goes on and, after seven years, the shine is beginning to wear on Impossibilities. People seem to expect them to be the answer to every solution and are angry when that doesn’t prove to be the case. Heroic Impossibilities face an increasingly skeptical public and increasingly more difficult challenges.
