UnderHill Technologies
From HOTGT
Mark Hill, formerly of Intellisoft, Formerly of Mastermind Remote
Systems, formerly at SciTech, has launched his own business inventing
useful items, from solid state conductors, to useful gadgets,
underHill Technologies does it all.
Mark walked into the disused basement of his small house in the Curry
District of Paradox City. The walls of the small room were lined with
half finished gadgets, boxes of mechanical and electronic parts, and
exposed circuit boards, some humming with power, others burnt out and
discarded in bin. He cleared some space on the long workbench and
divided into two categories: trash (useless burnt out, or irrepairable
equipment), and save(tools, functional trivial inventions, broken but
repairable gadgets). As he started working he noticed that more and
more things ended up in the "Save" category. If he moved into an
apartment he simply would not have room for so much stuff. And yet he
could not bear the thought of just junking it all. So he further
divded the piles into: keep, sell, give away. He still ended up with
more than he coudl reasonably store in a new place.
He started calling around to his friends around the city and country
to find out if they wanted any of his pet projects. A couple of them
jumped at the offers and instisted that they pay for them. He
resisted, but looking at his checking account agreed to seel them at
cost. Then, out of curiosity, one of his friends asked what else he
had. He gave the friend a partial catalog, and the friend suggested he
try patenting some of them and selling them himself. He thought of his
new responsibilities and couldn't imagine running a big manufacturing
company. Then his friend suggested licensing the products to other
companies to produce on a larger scale. All he would do, is invent the
things, the other companies would market, manufacture and sell the
things.
Over the next few days, he went to work making sense of the projects
he had sitting around in his basement, or fully spec'd out on his
computers but never actually built.
He collected some past patents, filled out the applications for a
dozen more based on designs he had handy, and called his lawyer to
handle the details of incorporation and handling the patents.
The lawyers predicted sales of his licenses would be sufficient to buy
a small lab near the University, and space to build a decent workshop,
they would also let him keep funding the Foundation for I-Trauma
Victims (The IV Foundation) and keep his house!
The patent licenses come in two varieties(use and research licenses).
Use licenses allow the invention to be used in products by the owner
of the license; research licenses allow the company to use the
invention for the development of its own technologies.
Unusual Restrictions.
(a) underHill Technologies reserves the right to use the patented
technologies in its own products or future patents.
(b) licensee's must indicate the specific use and research prject the
invention is to be used for. If used for any other purpose, the
resulting product and all associated research or peripherals become
property of underHill Technologies. All uses are subject to
underHill's approval.
Some of the items underHill Technologies patented/licensed:
1. 256bit Random Exchange Encryption Remote - A Device which ensures
only the possessor of the correct encryption key can operate a remote
device. Off shoot of his research in remote control. Licensed by Lexus
Motors for high security Keyless entry/operation.
2. Quantum Effect math coprocessor - Useful for 'fuzzy' match
applications, like rendering, analog randomization, targetting.
Licensed to Catship Games.
3. Sim-Gyro - A microscopic simulator of a gyroscope.Using Nano
tubes, this device the size of a ballbearing can transmit data about
position (up/down, cardinal directions, etc..). Licensed to
Robotic-Surgical-Devices for use in... robot surgical devices.
4. Nano-Tube Paper - Paper thin sheets of nano-tubes in multiple
colors. Patents licensed to Diamond Age Products, working to develop a
'paper' like computer monitor. Works, but is too expensive for
commercial production.
5. RC-Cell Adapter - Turns a normal cell phone into an RC controller
for most radio controlled vehicles or devices. Licensed to Shaper Image.
6. Hydrogen Cultivator - Composite Synthetic material that draws in
floating hydrogen in the exposed atmosphere channels it to reservoirs.
Licensed to Angstrom Power (UK), still in development, but could
provide passive energy source on a large scale.
7. Motion Image Compensator (MIC)- Using QE tech, the Motion Image
Compensator can compensate for errors in measurement due to jerky
movement. Licensed to General Dynamics for Helmet controller on modern
helicopters.
7. Portable MRI - Helmetlike MRI scanner (using MIC technology)
capable of being worn by a person without remaining in one place, but
still connected to computers and power supply by bulk cables (so
useful in a neuroscience labs). licensed to Paradox University
Neuroscience Lab.
8. "Third hand" - robotic arm which uses users head movements to move
something in its grasp to a position most comfortable for the viewer.
Can rotate, tilt, spin objects for easy viewing. Grasping device has a
strong but gentle touch suitable for very delicate materials. Patent
held, individual models produced by by Tesla Scientific Instruments.
