August 2517: On the Way to Paquin
While I was healed up from the incident on the way to Regina, I done and gone found myself a bit of a mystery. Seems my dear ghuh kept secrets from me. I'm sure he was a thinking to spare me undue worry, but to find a mystery while attempting to sort through the final meager belongings of the previous crew, had me unsteady. And I don't get shaken terribly easily. It were a simple photo of a group of men, prisoners from somewhere. The picture was obviously taken on the sly, being some part of it blurry from the motion of the one taking the picture and of the moving subjects. Yet I could see quite plain as day, the man in the middle could be no one other than our Pa. He weren't a dead man. Such turn of events, solidified my decision to take on a crew.
Now, my ghuh always told me a good Captain trusts his crew. At the same time he said to know what your crew can do. So, I got myself a crew and chance one to watch them in action. I guess you could say fate has handed me a bit of luck in a gamble with uneven odds.
This here new crew seems to take direction well and more than that, they seem to know their stuff. I couldn't be happier, except perhaps if I were to get my brother's crew back. I suppose I'll tell you a bit about them here. Right now, I've got three definite crew members and a possible fourth.
I've already told you about Del, the bright ray of sunshine. Not only does she handle herself well with mechanicing, she works mighty fine with words. I watched her bargaining the general store clerk for a bit of decent food. Thanks to her, we'll be eating less paste on our journeying.
I've never had a chance before today to interact with Vincent Locke. I found him a bundle of smooth talking confidence. So far, that so called bravado was not unfounded. He handled himself well when the action heated up. If he didn't have those stories attached to him, he'd be a fine specimen of a man for any Shao Jeh.
I didn't have any expectations of picking ourselves up a doctor so soon. And yet here we were to find one Doctor Phineas Cage a helping Doctor Johnson at Victoria Falls. He was looking to get off Regina and well, with the only boat around, I made him an offer. I think I might have underestimated the value of this man as I gave him the chance to stay out of the fighting, being a man of medicine and all. Perhaps my upbringing assumes a doctor deals in the preservation of life. Yet, here I find a man with the ability to heal and take care of himself in a fight. He gone done and blowed the knee cap out of one of the guards we was defending ourselves from. I won't make that mistake again.
I also found myself a passenger. A pretty face by the name of James Heru. Of them all, I weren't sure about him. He was looking for passage to Paquin and seeing as I was heading in the same direction and could use the cash, I scooped him along. He seems one of those scholarly types, though I haven't had a chance to talk to him too extensively. There's a rule, you don't go asking a passenger about themselves unless it's important to the survival of the ship and its crew. So, all would've been well, except, there was one thing missing. He didn't have the platinum to pay the whole trip. In our initial talkings, he told me he could handle himself with a gun and normally, I wouldn't have thought that anything special considering we weren't looking to get shot up on the way to Paquin, but I agreed to a huge discount with the one condition he'd pay me back some other way. Maybe I was gifted with a touch of foresight. I believe his actions on our job before we left Regina did paid for his passage sufficient. Though I don't plan on telling him that just yet. You see, for a scholarly man, he seems to have an awful good amount of breaking in and sneaking abilities. That is, from what I've seen. We could use one of those and being he's a traveling, we could give him a flexible means of traveling.
This small job before we left Regina went smoother than most plans I've seen my brother enact. Sure, the huge storm as we was leaving for the ship derailed us for a few hours and has added a few more repairs to the ever increasing list. But, in the end, we survived. We did have some tense moments while we was setting down our plans. Fin, as Dr. Cage wished to be called, asked me one key question. I'm afraid I got a might bit upset with him when he did it. Looking back, he had a point. It's been barely three weeks since their deaths: Ken, Heat, Celio, David, and Agatha. By all rights, I should be a bawling Bei Bi Shiou Ren on the floor. And I suppose if someone looked real deep, they'd see some of that. But I know, a good captain don't show fear or doubt to his crew. It just ain't good for the surviving. Anyways, Fin kept asking me if I thought I could handle leading this crew into a situation where everyone could die like thems others. He kept asking me if I had it in me. I dare say I told him he ought to keep his own counsel lest he found himself with a few missing limbs. Hindsight being what it is, I regret my words.
I'm not sure what the others are thinking, but I can already see the signs. There ain't no one whose gonna buy this piece of remembrance from Earth-That-Was. It ain't nothing but a Bai Li Mohn. Sure, I'll try to sell it, but in the end, I'll be looking around to give us some more work right aways. I've got responsibilities to the crew and to find out where my Pa be taken.
