August 2517: An Asteroid in the Black

In today's modernizing 'verse, most folk don't well believe in omens. I guess that's their benefit, living in the safety of their alliance homes and eating their alliance foods. However, out here in the black, there are a might too many things that can't be explained with fancy words and complicated gadgets. Out here, a person takes the omens for what they are. Mine came in the form of a woman named Del, bright as day, floating in the middle of the black and a Reaver, terrorizingly insane, trying to cut me up with nothing but a knife and a ferocious grin.

I won't go into the details of the situation here as that ain't my point. Suffice to say, I'm sitting here in the hangar of a base carved into the center of an asteroid, contemplating my life. I needed some right awful reminding that I had a choice. I could stare out into the black until my sanity has done gone away, or I could pick myself up and try to see the bright side of things.

Honestly, after facing down a Reaver, I don't suspect I'll be wanting to repeat that experience anytime soon. That's of course if I survive the trip back to Regina. I didn't get away without paying a price. I've been badly cut up and though I know some first aiding, it don't help if I can't sew my own wounds.

As for the woman, Del. I've seen the signs and there ain't no coincidence in the cheeriest young woman coming and stepping in my way. She knows her way around an engine well enough to boot. She says her and her captain was a heading to Paquin to drop off some shipment. I recognized her captain's name. Vincent Locke is one of those men who by all rights don't be deserving to captain a ship. We used to tell amusing stories about him to while away the time. Still, I hear he's a decent pilot, one that ought to be respected for his skill. I suppose after I reach Regina and talk to Dr. Johnson and after I make my decision what to do next. Perhaps if that next thing is keeping the Mao's Claw flying, I suppose I'll ask them if they'd wish to sign on with me. I've never Captained a ship before though I'd like to think I've done my brother proud and learned all I could from him.
