Washington Adams had two strikes against him. First, he was poor. Second, he was black. Unable to afford the universities that didn't automatically reject blacks, he pursued science on his own. He was experimenting with prisms and mirrors when a small gas leak in his basement laboratory causes an explosion. Washington not only survived the explosion, he discovered that the prisms and mirrors had somehow fused to his body. Through experimentation he discovered he could control light with his new, glass exoskin. In fact, he had to wear a special suit to keep his powers under control. Wanting to help in the war effort, Adams offered his services to Operation: Alpha. The government didn't admit Adams was a black man until nearly two decades after the end of World War II. Washington Adams died of lung cancer two years after the war ended.
