DETROIT, 1942 A helmeted rider in red coveralls drives around a test track.
He comes to a stop on his gleaming Harley Motorbike. Rider: “I don’t know, Kyle. I got up to 60 no problem that run.”
The rider removes the helmet, revealing a young colored man, smiling happily. Rider: “This is a prototype for America’s soldiers. Maybe you just don’t have the touch.”
He cracks a smile and tosses the helmet to a dour-looking blond man in a test-suit. Rider: “Don’t worry, we’ll have it tuned so anyone can use it in time for you to show it off at the military conference next month.”
Still smiling, the young man grabs a toolbox and walks off into a garage. Kyle aims a halfhearted kick at the tire. Kyle, thinking: “It’s bad enough that young Connell is our best mechanic without him being able to outrace me, too!”
Kyle gets on the bike and begins another test drive. Kyle, thinking: “Bad to be shown up by a colored man. Even worse if he somehow interferes with my plan to steal this motorbike for my German masters.”

THAT EVENING Connell leans over a glowing vat, his face lit luridly against a backdrop of the warehouse interior. Connell, thinking: “This vat is full of chromium and electric current. It should be enough to chrome-plate all the engine parts we’ll need for tomorrow.”
Kyle’s face looms out of the darkness. Connell turns, startled. Connell: “Kyle! I didn’t hear you come in. Why are you here so late?” Kyle: “I had hoped it wouldn’t come to this…”
Kyle brandishes a monkey wrench and clubs Connell over the head. Kyle: “but you were in the wrong place at the wrong time!”
Kyle looms over Connell’s unconscious form. Kyle, thinking: “I’m sure electroplating won’t affect a person, but tomorrow they’ll find the boy drowned in the chromium vat.”
Kyle lifts Connell over the rail. Kyle, thinking: “They’ll think he got careless, hit his head, and fell. No one will suspect that Nazis were involved!”
Kyle watches as Connell’s body sinks into the glowing, silvery metal of the vat. Kyle: “Auf wiedersehen, mein Gegner!*” * See you later, my rival! – ed

MINUTES LATER Kyle lurks in the doorway of the warehouse as a sedan drives up and two somberly dressed gentlemen get out. Kyle, thinking: “Finally, my contacts! I knew their German punctuality would not fail me.”
The spies share a wholesome, tobacco-filled cigarette with Kyle. Spy: “Haben Sie der Muster?*” Kyle: “Ja. Er ist im Depot.**” * Do you have the prototype. ** Yes. It is in the warehouse. – ed
Close on the face of one of the spies, his cigarette falling from his lips. Spy: “Ist es hinter dem Metallmann?*” * Is it behind the metal man? – ed
Striding across the warehouse floor is a figure seemingly made like a sculptor’s statue covered in chrome plating. He looks angry.
Close up, the figure is recognizable as Connell because of pieces of his red coveralls visible beneath the chromium. He seems to be unharmed, symbiotically bonded to the chrome.
From outside of the warehouse door, Connell seems to be approaching quickly. Kyle: “But that’s impossible!” But now is a time for impossibilities.

Connell swings a backhand, knocking one of the spies into the wall of the warehouse like a ragdoll. Connell, thinking: “Their voices woke me. I could hear that they were speaking in German.”
The remaining spy shoots at Connell, aiming for uncoated spots. His chrome plating seems to react, filling the spots just before the bullets hit, stopping them cold. Connell, thinking: “They must be here for the prototypes. I knew there was something fishy about Kyle!”
Connell lands a solid blow against the second spy, laying him out cold. Connell, thinking: “I don’t know why I didn’t drown. I sensed something strange, and reached out to the material around me.”
Kyle tries to run, but Connell leaps effortlessly across the lot to land in front of him. Connell, thinking: “I now seem to be more than human, and none the worse for wear.”
Connell grabs Kyle and flings him back into the first spy, just now standing up. Connell, thinking: “I have a responsibility to use these new powers for the greater good.”
Kyle and the spy both slump down and lay still. Connell, thinking: “I should call the feds and let them know that I caught three Nazis, and that I have something even better than a prototype for the war effort: me!” And the rest is history. Check out the first issue of Operation: Omega to see the further adventures of Connell, in his new role as the mighty Chrome!
